a sixties guy
Richard Knapp – USA (Connecticut) 2009 Dark Highland Green #6574
I was a Steve McQueen fan in high school. I remember wearing a black turtle neck shirt with a camel sports jacket with black paints to school, as you could not wear blue jeans to school back then. I went into the Air Force in 1966. I was in Vietnam when Bullitt came out and to be honest I don’t remember the first time I saw the movie. After my 18-month tour was over, I met the gal who would become my wife and bought my first Mustang, a 1967 Arcadian Blue Fastback. I didn’t have a lot of money to put extras into it, but was able to put chrome rims and wide tires and Hooker long-tube headers on it. It was a daily driver for many years, but things stared to go, so with a heavy heart I sold it. I always thought I would someday get another fastback in British Racing Green (that’s what it was called back then).
Fast forward to 2009, a co-worker just bought a new Mustang, and that got me thinking about my old Mustang. I started to look at Mustangs and noticed that Ford had come out with a dark green Mustang called the Bullitt. On Nov 24, 2010 I purchased the car and found Bullitt # 6574 was manufactured on Nov 7, my second daughter’s birthday. That’s one reason why this car is so special to me.
I’ve done some modifications because I was a Sixties guy. I had to have cams in it, so I installed Comp Mutha thumpers. It also has Kooks headers, Ford Racing throttle body and manifold, a 4:10 rear, Ford KR500 mufflers, wide tires all around with black Bullitt style rims, and some chrome items under the hood.
I have many trophies and awards in my nine years of owning this car. I think the best award I received was at the 2018 All Ford Show in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, along with the Bullitt Nationals. I was fortunate to win first place in the People’s Choice and Bullitt Nationals in my class.
I will never get rid of this car. Every time I get in and start the engine, the roar coming out of the mufflers gives me a feeling of an accomplishment. It’s something I always wanted and now have. What better feeling when you are driving down the highway and younger person pulls up next to you, gives you the thumbs up as he is videoing you on his cellphone. It makes an old man feel really good knowing I’ve got something special.
As Steve McQueen said “I live for myself and answer to nobody.”
